Frequently Asked Questions GPSM RoG® Master & Speeder kit for hunting dogs

Frequently Asked Questions

1. According to the presentation, the RoG® Master & Speeder GPS Kit is equipped with GPS VHF pairing and tracer search with a SIM card via a smartphone, is that correct?

Exactly, the RoG® Master & Speeder GPSM Kit uses both VHF and GSM technologies separately. It's referred to as hybrid GPS: in VHF mode, without a SIM cardGarmin or Sportdog GPS, you can pair your Master controller with up to 20 Speeder collars. In GSM mode, the collars require a SIM card to connect to GSM networks, while the Master controller transmits the tracer's information to your smartphone via Bluetooth.

2. Is the SIM subscription included in the kit price?

The sim card plan depends on your carrier, and we have special offers available for our valued customers. When purchasing the RoG® kit, you will be presented with options to get multi-carrier SIM cards suitable for RoG® GPS collars. Managing the SIM card plan must be done separately by the customer.

3. Does this mean that if I already have a SIM card subscription for my smartphone, I won't need to subscribe to an additional specific plan, as is the case with other types of trackers?

Each GPS collar is a separate connected device, and it requires a 4G SIM card to connect to 4G GSM networks. In this regard, the RoG® provider has negotiated special rates with carriers. You will receive an email with registration details shortly after your purchase, allowing you to benefit from this shared plan for all your RoG® devices. Your smartphone subscription only applies to your smartphone (which also needs network coverage to use the tracking app). That being said, it's a proposal from the provider, but the final carrier decision for your GPS SIM cards is up to you. You just need to make sure the SIM card has sufficient 4G data, a few SMS for configuration if necessary, and voice if you wish to use voice intercom functions.

4. What are the subscription options for the GPS SIM card?

You have the choice between the annual plan with 50 MB at 30 EUR incl. VAT (equivalent to €2.50 per month, taxes and activation fees included) for Europe or 50 MB at 57 USD incl. VAT (equivalent to $4.75 per month, taxes and activation fees included) for the USA and worldwide. We suggest going for the 50 MB plan. If you want to change your plan along the way, you can manage your usage independently for each of your RoG® devices, considering that a SIM card that doesn't use up all its plan can transfer its balance to another SIM card.

5. What is the advantage of having a 100 MB subscription compared to 50 MB for this specific type of usage?

You are free to manage your SIM card consumption on your user account. You can start with a 50 MB plan to evaluate your usage specific to your activity and then upgrade to 100 MB if needed. However, as you can see, from a price perspective, the 100 MB plan is more cost-effective than the 50 MB plan (the data quantity doubles, but the price increases by only 40%). {Please note that the 100 MB package is currently suspended.}

6. In VHF GPS mode, what is the effective range (location and training) of the RoG® kit? After discussions with other hunters (very hilly terrain), it is quite exceptional to exceed 1.86 mile [3 km], unlike the 9.32 miles [15 km] claimed by Sportdog and Garmin in the sales pitch.

The theoretical range of the RoG® kit in VHF mode has been measured up to 9.32 miles [15 km] apart between the transmitter and the receiver, depending on the terrain. However, the range in VHF mode (high-frequency radio waves) can be reduced in challenging areas (wooded and mountainous regions). According to the manufacturer's tests, the basic range is still 2 to 3 times greater than with Garmin GPS collars, giving it a significant advantage in terms of effectiveness and value for money, with a measured range of 1.86 to 3.1 miles [3-5 km] apart with the standard antenna. In GSM mode, the range becomes unlimited as long as the area is covered by the GSM network.

7. Are there already antennas available for these products to extend the range?

Of course, RoG® is developing its own range of long-range antennas for the GPS Master & Speeder kit. The RoG® Master & Dogtra 103 cm Roof Antenna is already available, which, depending on the terrain, can ensure a range of 3.73 to 9.32 miles [6-15 km] (and even more in flat areas).

8. Are Garmin's long-range antennas (roof antennas, telescopic, or flexible antennas) compatible with the ROG® collar range?

The other long-range antennas (roof antennas and various models like Ibiza, Omega, flexible, telescopic, etc.) specific to Garmin GPS are not compatible with the RoG® GPS, but the manufacturer is currently working on quickly distributing a new range of diversified antennas for its RoG® GPS kits, which should be available on peelagreen.fr in May 2023.

9. Is real-time tracking possible (called Live by Tractive) as well?

GPS collar tracking is updated every 2.5 seconds in VHF mode and every 5 seconds in GSM mode for each participant, enabling real-time tracking regardless of the tracking mode used.

10. Is the mobile app optimized for hunting?

Yes, indeed, the tracking app has been developed by RoG® and is optimized for hunting. It is not a generic app open to all connected devices.

11. Are IGN maps available?

Yes, the location app offers both options: IGN maps and Google Maps (typographic and satellite maps) worldwide.

12. Is there an additional subscription fee to use the mobile tracking app?

No, the tracking app to install on your smartphone is freely available to all users of the RoG® Master & Speeder kit. You can log in using your username and password.

13. What functionalities are available on the Master remote?

The RoG® Master offers the following functions:

  • Compass for VHF tracking
  • Training with 3 different levels of vibration or electrostatic stimulation
  • Frequency transmission settings
  • Sound recording control of the GPS collar

14. How does the VHF compass work, and is it suitable for tracking running dogs after hunting?

The compass indicates the direction of the selected dog to avoid multiple arrows. The rest is either hidden or grayed out. In addition to the direction, the compass option displays the distance in meters or kilometers that separates you from the GPS collar, the movement of each dog's logo (its orientation), and its altitude. Furthermore, the remaining battery charge indicator is visible for each connected Speeder GPS collar on the Master unit.

15. What are the advantages of the mobile app on a smartphone compared to the Master unit?

In addition to the fact that visibility on a smartphone is more comfortable due to the larger, smoother, and brighter screen, the mobile app offers the following additional features:

  • Topo, IGN, and satellite maps
  • Waypoints
  • Route history
  • Virtual fence
  • Customization of dogs
  • Find your GPS unit

16. Can the user add a Topo map themselves to optimize VHF tracking directly on the Master unit, in addition to the compass?

No, this is unnecessary. Unlike non-hybrid competitor brands, RoG® Hunting has decided to reserve satellite and IGN maps for the mobile app to maintain accessibility of all maps for all users without additional SD card purchase. The choice not to use these map licenses in VHF mode allows RoG® to offer a high-performance device at a price that defies competition, providing the best value for money in the market for hunting dog GPS collars.

17. Can a hands-free kit (smartwatch) be used instead of a smartphone to track the dogs?

Absolutely, the RoG® Watch Tracking 4G smartwatch is a hands-free kit that allows you to track your hunting dogs without the need for your hands to be occupied! It displays all the maps available in the mobile app for tracking, but it is not compatible with the compass, which is reserved for the VHF unit. Another benefit of this smartwatch is that it also allows you to run all your usual applications (email, SMS, phone calls, WhatsApp, heart rate monitor, YouTube, etc.).

18. Additionally, does the training function exist on all collars?

Yes, the training functions are available on all collars with 3 different vibration durations and 3 levels of electrostatic stimulation intensity.

19. We currently equip 30 dogs, with 20 using X collars, including 5 for training, and 10 with Y trackers. Is it possible to share the tracking app with multiple users in GSM mode using the RoG® Master & Speeder GPSM Kit, similar to how the Y tracker allows (for example, at the end of a hunt, all the beaters who are sharing can track the hunting dogs)?

Yes, absolutely, the main account administrator can add up to 20 participants to the whitelist of authorized people to track your hunting dogs, allowing the tasks of recovering the dogs at the end of your hunt to be shared. In other words, each participant, after installing the tracking app on their smartphone and creating an account, can track the dogs whose GPS collar is connected to the main account. However, it's important to note that since the RoG® kit is a hybrid system with a central unit that transmits information to the smartphone via Bluetooth (for the GSM mode), each participant using the GSM tracking feature of the mobile app must also have a RoG® Master unit to track the pack.

20. I'm interested in the RoG® GPS collars, but if we want to use the geolocation app on two smartphones simultaneously, does the Master remote need to be near both smartphones, or does one remote suffice?

Currently, the GPS cannot be shared between multiple apps without the use of a dedicated central unit. So, each participant must also have a RoG® Master unit to track the pack using the GSM tracking feature of the mobile appHowever, the distributor is aware of this limitation and is actively working on finding a solution. Since the system works only with a central unit that optimizes data reception, RoG® is looking to unlock this sharing feature via the phone network. It's important to note that if GPS sharing through a GSM connection is implemented, it could affect reception efficiency. However, RoG® is committed to finding a balance between the sharing feature and the overall performance of the system. RoG® is therefore committed to providing a solution in the medium term that offers both reliable reception and the ability to share GPS between multiple apps.

21. When the collar switches to GSM mode, is the training feature active?

No, the training features are active only in VHF mode (from the Master remote). In fact, the training mode in GSM is not as reliable because, in case of a temporary loss of the network, the signal could be sent with a delay when the GSM signal is restored, which would provide false information to the canine, a problem that disappears when using VHF.

22. Is there a performance difference between the ROG® Speeder and ROG® Speeder Mini collars?

There is no technical difference between the standard and Mini versions, which weigh 10.58 oz [300 g] each (including the strap). Only the strap of the VHF beacon has been reduced on the Speeder Mini to fit small dogs, but its performance remains the same. In both cases, the collar's orange strap is 1″ [2.54 cm] wide and 26.38″ [67 cm] long, which you can adjust to the dog's neck using the numerous notches on the strap. The other difference is aesthetic, with the Mini collar's strap having a fluorescent white band to distinguish the two versions.

23. Are the ROG® US or FR GPS devices compatible with other European versions?

As RoG® GPS units are based on VHF frequencies authorized in all countries, all RoG® Master & Speeder kit models are compatible with each other, whatever the state or country you're in, unlike Garmin GPS units, which generally have one model per country. However, it is always preferable to buy RoG® Hunting brand products from an official retailer for a regulated use on national territory.

24. Do you deliver worldwide?

Yes, we deliver internationally (US, UK, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Russia, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, etc.). Delivery is free for France and up to 29.99 USD for international DHL delivery.

25. Is the RoG® Master & Speeder GPS Kit compatible in all countries, or are there restrictions?

Regardless of the country we deliver to, the RoG® GPS kit has no usage restrictions. It operates on authorized frequencies, and the VHF mode is therefore compatible everywhere. Regarding the GSM mode, the multi-operator M2M SIM card provided by our partners in connected devices (provided separately) works throughout Europe. For countries outside of Europe, it is necessary to use a local operator or an international multi-operator SIM card.

26. Where is RoG®'s customer support located, and is it responsive?

RoG®'s customer support is located in France, available 6 days a week, and guarantees that your request will be processed within 48 hours.

27. What is the warranty for the RoG® Master & Speeder GPS Kit?

The warranty for the RoG® Master & Speeder GPSM kit is 2 years.

28. Do you offer trade-in deals for other collars?

We do not offer trade-ins for used GPS collars as such, but you have the option to use the following page on our website to post your classified ads if you wish to offer equipment in good condition for resale: https://peelagreen.fr/products/collier-gps-garmin-occasion (see the form at the bottom of the page).
